Oak Spring Farm
Yesterday, the City House gang headed out for a field trip to the Harley’s Oak Spring Farm. Wayne Harley shared some of their story as a family that has farmed their land for nearly 100 years. As the sunset colors transformed the hills and trees around us, Aaron Harley hopped in the tractor to take us on a hayride tour of the place they pour themselves into. There’s an incredible variety of crops and vegetables growing: corn, pumpkins, raspberries and blackberries, sunflowers, kale, spinach, broccoli, asparagus, barley, beans, turnips, tomatoes……plus orchards and cows!
It was a great opportunity to catch a glimpse of the life of a family who lives deeply connected to the land. We got to see the place where the wonderful apples and lettuce and beans and potatoes we’ve been buying at the farmer’s market are coming from and spend a little time with our friends who put in immense hard work (dawn to dusk, literally) to grow the food we eat.
